St. Edward's is a vibrant Kindergarten to Grade 8 school community with a long history. Over the years, St. Edward's has found its mission in serving the immigrant population of Winnipeg. Its staff includes teachers, educational assistants, administrative staff and a custodian. Staff, parents, and Board members work together to provide a positive learning environment based on Christian values. In addition to following the Manitoba curriculum, students also participate in daily religion classes.

A Brief History

On July 10, 1909, through the sacrifices of the good parishioners of St. Edward’s, who realized that a parish cannot be complete without a school where moral training of the child could be guarded, a two-room school was provided for the children. The contractor had been D. H. Barlow. Three Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions were in charge: Mother St. Gabriel (McCormick) from New Zealand and Sister Lawrence (Malloy) and Sr. M. of the Holy Angels, both from Canada. The Sisters were in Winnipeg at the request of His Excellency Archbishop A. Langevin, O.M.I.

The Sisters arrived in Winnipeg on Friday, November 5, 1909 to begin their work of education and ministry. The school was not quite ready, but they were able to take possession of the four rooms in it, reserved for their use. The remainder of the building was utilized for the parish priests’ residence and a small chapel.

On Monday, November 8, 1909, the school opened its doors to 40 grade 1 to grade 4 students. On the 12th of December, His Grace Archbishop Langevin blessed the new school and mentioned how pleased he was with the new school building and the attendance of the students. By 1913, the attendance had increased to 150 students and continued to do so in each succeeding year. In 1915, it was decided to add high school up to grade 10. This endeavour proved to be very successful. The expanding enrollment prompted the Sisters to look for a new site for their convent, which they subsequently opened on March 19, 1923.

Renovations

In the summer of 2008, St. Edward's renovated the inside of the school bringing new life into the building. The $1,000,000 renovation brought a much more model look and feel to the place. Their 15 foot ceilings were now 8 feet. New floors, bathrooms, and stairways were just the starting points. New networking and electrical were installed throughout and long with a new air handling unit giving cold air in the summer and fresh air year round.
